Visits to two distinctly different Amish communities highlight this late-summer countryside tour. A stop at The Butterfly House in Whitehouse, Ohio will feature over 1000 butterflies feeding on the nectar that they gather fluttering from flower to flower. Species from North and South America and Asia will demonstrate their beauty as we watch them dance, search for their mates and bask in the warm sunshine. As we roll through the farmlands of east-central Ohio , we will begin to see black-buggy traffic, farmers tilling their fields with teams of horses and laundry flapping on clotheslines, sure signs that we are nearing the largest Amish community in the world. The “plain people” of Walnut Creek , Millersburg and Berlin preserve a way of life that is quaint and unspoiled and which they are pleased to demonstrate. We will take a guided backroads tour to the shops of a local leather artisan, basket maker, hardware vendor and other trades people and crafters, and the icing on the cake will be an Amish-style wedding feast, complete with a few surprises. We will leave the foothills of Ohio behind as we travel to Shipshewana , Indiana , perhaps most noted for its Flea Market—the largest in the Midwest —where we may purchase everything from fresh fruit to handcrafted furniture. As we tour the Hoosier Buggy Shop, Little Helper's Quilt Shop, a weaving and basket shop and enjoy another fine, made-from-scratch dinner in an Amish home, it will be interesting to compare this Amish community's traditions, beliefs and ways of life with those we encountered in Ohio. |
