Upper Peninsula Fall Color Tour

Big Spring - Munising - Whitefish Point - Lower Tahquamenon Falls
September 27 - 30, 2010

The Upper Peninsula has been called “The Paradise of Michigan,” and on this autumn tour we will discover why that nickname is so fitting. The trees north of the Mackinac Straits should be ablaze with color during our tour of the eastern U.P., further enhancing the natural wonders that await us. Big Spring , near Manistique, is a “just-because-it's-beautiful” stop that is hidden amidst pine and cedar trees in the Palms Book State Park . Big Spring is two hundred feet across and forty feet deep, fed by over 10,000 gallons of water per minute that gush from underground fissures. It's an emerald green pool so clear that we can see ancient tree trunks and fat trout appear to be suspended in nothingness as they slip through the crystal waters far below. In Munising, a glass-bottom boat tour will give us the opportunity to view ships that lie asleep in the deep, victims of Lake Superior 's tempestuous power and preserved by her frigid waters for over one hundred years. For a spectacular look at Pictured Rocks, an early-evening cruise on the crystal-clear blue-green waters of Lake Superior will take us past soaring sandstone cliffs, beaches, sand dunes and waterfalls, set against azure skies and enhanced by the jewel tones of fall foliage. Scenic in-land and coastal routes will take us to Whitefish Point, located on the northern tip of Whitefish Bay . As we take in the majesty and mystery of this “ Shipwreck Coast ,” we will tour the Shipwreck Museum , complete with an Edmund Fitzgerald exhibit, as well as the oldest active lighthouse on Lake Superior . Traveling through the aptly named town of Paradise , we will arrive at Tahquamenon Falls State Park , where we will view the root beer-colored Lower Tahquamenon Falls , nestled within the pristine, old-growth forest. This tour is perfect for getting out of life's fast lane for a while. Temperatures in the Upper Peninsula can be downright chilly at this time of year, especially in the evening and on the water. Please bring along a warm jacket as well as sturdy shoes.
